Iman Mersal (Egipto)

Autor de cuatro libros de poemas en árabe. Nació en 1966 en el Delta Norte de Egipto y empezó a publicar poesía a los 16 años. En Egipto editó dos revistas culturales antes de trasladarse a Estados Unidos. Vivió en Boston y luego se trasladó a Edmonton en Canadá, donde actualmente enseña literatura árabe en la Universidad de Alberta. Sus poemas han sido traducidos en muchos idiomas y han aparecido en revistas literarias.

Is the author of four books of poetry in Arabic: Ittisafat (Characterizations), 1990; Mamarr Mu’tim Yasluh li Ta’allum al-Raqs (A Dark Alley Suitable for Dance Lessons), 1995; al-Mashy Atwal Waqt Mumkin (Walking As Long As Possible), 1997, and Jughrafia Badila (Alternative Geography), 2006. A fifth poetry book is currently in press.  Iman was born in 1966 in the northern Egyptian Delta, and began to publish her poetry at age 16. In Egypt, she edited the cultural and literary reviews Bint al-Ard and Adab wa Naqd for several years before leaving for North America. Mersal relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, USA in 1998 and subsequently moved to Edmonton, Canada where she currently holds a professorial appointment in Arabic literature at the University of Alberta. Selected poems from her oeuvre have been translated into numerous languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, Dutch and Italian, and have appeared in journals such as American Poetry Review, Kenyon Review, and Paris Review. A selection of Mersal’s work, translated into English by Khaled Mattawa, was published by Sheep Meadow Press in 2008 under the title These Are Not Oranges, My Love.
