Un poema desde Irlanda

Un poema desde Irlanda

De/From Matthew Sweeney (Irlanda)

…Was great to be at the festival and see lovely Granada – and meet all the poets.

I’m attaching a little poem I wrote before I left that contrasts the attitude to poetry in your country and in most others.

All best wishes,
Matthew

Granada

A line of horses and carriages
beneath the trees – some horses
with posies on their heads;
mariachi trios accosting drinkers
on patios of hotels; purveyors
of sunglasses, ornamental vases,
trinkets, hammocks, boxed cigars…;
music hopping out of speakers,
inviting dance; feral dogs,
all brown, padding everywhere.
And the carnival poesia is over,
the poets departed – to countries
where their kind disappears,
where only a rhyming horse
would make the news, posies of
metaphors adorning his head,
hooves beating out the rhythm
till the multitude convenes
in the far-off, sheltered field
to hear the horse for themselves,
and put poetry on the front page.
